Elise + Joben

We had the honor of capturing Elise and Joben’s wedding day in Cedar Falls Iowa on June 20th, 2015.  It is a very special honor when a couple asks you to photograph in a location personal to them.  These two could have found someone local, or someone closer in proximity – but instead without having ever met in person, they opted to have us as their photographers.  That is such a joy and privilege, and we were so very thankful to them for trusting us with their memories.
I knew I would like Elise from the moment we started talking.  You could immediately tell she has a good head on her shoulders, is laid back, and appreciative.  I knew as she talked about Joben that we would like him as well – and without a doubt within 60 seconds of being face to face we felt like old friends.  This couple, their families, and their friends are such remarkable people.  Kind and friendly, funny and witty, and not afraid to have a great time!!
When we arrived in Cedar Falls the day prior to the wedding, it was GORGEOUS out.  In the St.Louis area, we’ve experienced loads of rain so leaving that behind was a breath of fresh air.  We checked out the adorable downtown area of Cedar Falls, the river area and all their beautiful parks – this area was absolutely immaculate.  We ate dinner at a swanky little rooftop patio amidst the most perfect temperatures.  It was a glorious evening!!  Upon awaking the next day we could hear dreaded raindrops pounding on the window and gale force winds.  Apparently, we brought the rain with us.  With an outdoor wedding at one of the most gorgeous places in Iowa, we knew this was going to put a damper on the plans.  But as you check out this post I think you’ll see that Mother Nature had a few surprises in for us!! Enjoy a look into Elise and Joben’s day!
No, it doesn’t get much better than these shoes.EJ_001EJ_002EJ_003EJ_004Joben, do you model for a living?  Because you should.EJ_005Is Elise stunning or what!?!  There is something so electric and vivacious about this beautiful young woman.  Elise – you rock my world.EJ_006EJ_007WHat a gorgeous first look location, and gorgeous first look!EJ_008EJ_009Do you see that?  That eyebrow?  This very moment I nearly died.  I’m a fan of a good eyebrow raise on command, and when Elise did this without prompting she stole my heart.  But then when I commented on it and she referred to it as the “John Black eyebrow” we were BFFs from then on.  (If you don’t know what we are referring to, you probably can’t be BFF’s with Elise like I am.) 😉EJ_010EJ_011I can hardly handle their cuteness.EJ_012EJ_013How fabulous is Elise’s dress?  It looked like it was made for her, and was incredibly stunning.  EJ_014EJ_015EJ_016EJ_017EJ_017AEJ_018EJ_019EJ_020EJ_021EJ_022EJ_023Although mediately the rain had stopped before the first look, after the wedding party photos it began to downpour.  The ceremony was moved indoors, and Elise and Joben were pretty disappointed to have their dream outdoor wedding moved inside.  But honestly – this pretty much sums up the reaction when you walked into the room…
EJ_024EJ_025EJ_026EJ_027Elise’s sister sang at their ceremony and I am telling you – there wasn’t a dry eye in the place.  Her beautiful gift left everyone with a lump in their throat!EJ_028And if that didn’t make you tear up, their vows would have.  I love when a couple writes their own vows, and the incredibly powerful promises they made to one another took my breath away.EJ_029EJ_030EJ_031Rhubarb Punch and Mojitos?  Yes, please.EJ_032The staff quickly flipped the ceremony into the reception and wowza – talk about knock your socks off.EJ_033Oh dear lord – this was so epic there aren’t even words.EJ_034EJ_035Elise and Joben took dance lessons and had a choreographed first dance.  It was the best I’d ever seen – like Dancing with the Stars but more body parts were covered.EJ_036EJ_037EJ_038EJ_039EJ_040So after the reception started, the rain stopped and the sun started to come out – and when the heavens opened up over Iowa the sky did something spectacular!!!  I can’t say I’d ever seen anything like this – Roger and I were OBSESSED with this gorgeous light.  We grabbed the bride and groom and headed outdoors and took advantage of every single bit of this beautiful evening before it quickly was gone.  The following photos are some of our favorite ever.
EJ_041EJ_042EJ_043EJ_044EJ_045EJ_046EJ_047EJ_048EJ_049Did you just melt?  I didn’t even write anything so you could take it all in.  Was that the most magnificent thing you’ve ever seen?  Iowa – thank you.EJ_050EJ_051Elise and Joben – we were HONORED to be there for this incredible day of yours.  We adored you both, your families, and your friends.  We cannot say enough nice things about the entire experience, but we hope we can convey how much we admire you both.  Thank you for the gift of knowing you, and for being a part of this tremendous day!
